Sail with M/S Fram – nostalgia on the water in Vrådal

Sometimes, slowing down is all you need. No rush, no pressure – just the gentle splash of water, views of forests and mountains, and a wooden boat gliding quietly along. That’s the feeling you get aboard the M/S Fram, a historic veteran boat that has belonged to the lakes of Vrådal for over a hundred years.

A piece of living history

The M/S Fram was built in 1909 as a tugboat for transporting timber across lakes Nisser and Vråvatn. Until the 1970s, it hauled logs through the landscape. In the 1980s, the boat was carefully converted into a passenger vessel. Ever since, it has been quietly taking visitors across the water each spring and summer – still with the same wooden charm and timeless character.

The route: islands, locks and silence

The route: islands, locks and silence

From May to October, you can join a two-hour cruise on the M/S Fram. The journey starts at the pier of the Straand Hotel in Vrådal and takes you past small islands, quiet bays, and lush shorelines. A highlight is the passage through the Småstraum Lock – the highest hand-operated lock in Northern Europe. You’ll also pass by the Vrådal lock museum, where the history of local water transport is told.

On board: simple comfort and views

The M/S Fram isn’t a luxury cruise ship – and that’s exactly its charm. Wooden benches, fresh air and 360-degree views make this a truly special experience. A small onboard kiosk offers coffee, cold drinks and light snacks. Take a seat on deck, breathe deeply, and watch the landscape shift slowly from rippling water to wooded hills and distant peaks.
